"Device to Root Out Evil" par Dennis Oppenheim

Quelques fragments retenus:
Citation :
Despite what Oppenheim suggests, perhaps disingenuously, the Device raises many sensitive talking points about Christianity.

It is playing with sacred symbols, including the cross.
[...]
As a title, Device to Root Out Evil is suitably ambivalent and multiedged. On face value, it could suggest the Christian cross is adept at “rooting out evil” in the human soul and society.

But the title could well be satirical, suggesting the church has been turned upside down by its own imperfect, or even “evil,” history, and needs to redeem itself.
[...]
Even though the Device makes light of the loss of public reverence for Christianity and perhaps other religions, Kerr likes how the sculpture turns the institutional church on its head.

“The vital point is that religions have to change how they are perceived to get the attention of the general public,” Kerr says.

“Old doctrines do not capture the hearts and minds of so many that a new order is required. It’s not that people disparage spirituality, rather they crave it in a form that is meaning for their contemporary
lives.” It’s a compelling interpretation.
[...]
If the Device, which some say was supposed to be temporary anyway, doesn’t stay in its spot at the foot of Bute Street, and its owners want to sell it for as much as they can based on the highly marketable
controversy surrounding it, maybe the downtown mini-park can become the site of a shifting sculptural feast. That will mean celebrating the flux that characterizes this West Coast region, where, after all, aboriginals’ sacred art never lasted longer than a couple of generations, because it was mostly made of wood.

Publicly highlighting different works of challenging art, which provoke dialogue, may be the best approach for this young, diverse, evolving city — where the only real constant is change.
Hmm. L'État ayant remplacé l'Église et la francophonie ayant remplacé le Vatican pour les francos vivant en milieu minoritaire, le Canard cogite maintenant sa propre régurgitation franco pour en exorciser tous les démons. A suivre...
